New York State Parking Association

Dear Colleague,

Times change. For example, what does $20.00 buy you today? It seems as though once you “break” a twenty dollar bill it’s gone before you know it. However, in the spirit of turning back the clock and stretching your twenty dollars NYSPA has an incredible deal for you!

On Tuesday, June 17, 2008, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, NYSPA will sponsor the first annual Summer Retreat for members, non-members, friends, supporters and their significant others, all for the flat rate of $20.00 per person. This all-day event will be held at the famous Hinderwadel’s Grove in Syracuse, NY. It’s our way of saying “thank you” for your support to the Association for all these years as well as continuing our mission to educate our members on current topics and issues impacting the parking and transportation profession.

You will be pleased to learn that nationally-recognized motivational speaker Julius Rhodes, President, The MPR Group, has agreed to join us for the day.  As he has done at our past two conferences, his dynamic presence will once again captivate our attention as he shares his insight on personal relations, human motivation and life in general, all in a fun way that Julius is nationally known for.

“Going Green” or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is having a huge impact on our daily lives. We are assembling a morning presentation and panel discussion on LEED.  This panel will include representatives from the public sector, design/architectural community, private development and public transit.  From “silver certification” to alternative fuels the panel will facilitate a pointed and pragmatic analysis of what the practicalities of “Going Green” has on our daily comings and goings, with a parking and transportation emphasis.

In the afternoon we are planning numerous outdoor activities to emphasize team building, camaraderie, open communications and other inter-personal activities. As the afternoon activities will involve some level of physical activity in warm weather, casual dress is encouraged. A wide variety of food and beverage will be provided.

The best part is that this memorable event is being offered at the flat rate of $20.00 per person.  That price - $20.00 - covers seven (7) hours of presentations, panel discussion, food and beverage (we guarantee you won’t leave hungry), networking and activities for everyone. Non-members who sign up as members at the event will receive a $20.00 credit towards their first year membership fee. NYSPA will cover all other costs for what is shaping up to be a fantastic event which may become the first of many more.  Click here to register

I wish you the best for 2008 and look forward to seeing you in Syracuse on June 17th.

Regards,

Bob

NYS Parking Association  2008 First Annual Summer Retreat

The New York State Parking Association held its first Summer Retreat on June 17.  Over 100 people attended the all-day event which was held at the famous Hinderwadel’s Grove in Syracuse, NY.

The morning program included a dynamic inter-active presentation by nationally-renowned motivational speaker Mr. Julius Rhodes, President, MPR Group.  His presentation, “Establishing the Garden” was a lead-in into the theme for the day, which was Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and sustainability.

David Keefe, one of the founding members of NYSPA, said a few words about the vision the original members had when they established the Association in the early 1990s.  Also in attendance were Glen Sicard (University of Rochester Medical Center) and Craig Barber (AllPro Parking) who were there in the beginning formative years.

A roundtable panel discussion was facilitated by NYSPA Executive Committee members Ms. Johnna Frosini (College at Brockport) and Ms. Maria Wallace (Buffalo University).  The lively discussion involved “seed” questions posed to the panelists and a back-and-forth dialogue with the attendees covering topics such as the LEED point system, alternative fuels, lighting, energy, Transportation Demand Management, technology and related topics.

In the afternoon Julius took over as Master of Ceremonies for several outdoor activities that focused on team building involving giants, wizards and dwarfs as well as flipping a tarp while 40 people kept their feet on it. Quite an achievement that vividly demonstrated the importance of working as a team! The day wound down with some physically challenging and not-so-physically challenging events to continue the teambuilding theme as well as networking, relaxation and just plain fun.  There was something for everyone!

Beginning with a continental breakfast and continuing throughout the afternoon, Hinderwadel’s Grove provided an opulent choice of foods, deserts and beverages for which they are famous.

NYSPA heavily subsidized the event as its way of saying “thank you” to its regular members, affiliates and consultants.  The event was also used as a kick-off for a renewed membership drive as non-members were invited to attend at the same cost as members.

The event was such a success that already the Board of Directors is looking into scheduling the second Summer retreat in 2009.  Please visit the Association website at www.nyspa.net  for photos from this inaugural event.
